L&#039;obiettivo di creare un gran numero di gradi di lega \u00e8 quello di ottenere la selezione pi\u00f9 precisa per la creazione di strutture e meccanismi pi\u00f9 avanzati in grado di sopportare i carichi richiesti. La tecnologia di marcatura per gli acciai altolegati \u00e8 la seguente: le lettere indicano la presenza di un elemento e un numero indica la percentuale media di tale elemento. Tutte le leghe, senza eccezioni, possono essere utilizzate per creare strutture unite tramite saldatura. L&#039;elevata saldabilit\u00e0 del metallo consente la massima resistenza della saldatura, motivo per cui l&#039;acciaio viene utilizzato per strutture saldate sottoposte a carichi meccanici elevati. Alcuni gradi di ingegneria meccanica si distinguono anche per le loro propriet\u00e0 amagnetiche, l&#039;elasticit\u00e0 e l&#039;elevata temprabilit\u00e0.
